Talking past each other happens often between couples-and when couples work together, it’s even more common.

The aspirational gap.

That’s Psychology Today’s term for talking past each other. It’s the difference between what we think should be and what really is.

Your spouse talks about a project that you’re both working on. You start talking about it too, but without listening to what your spouse is saying. Maybe you’ve already moved ahead in your mind. Maybe you’re still smarting from an earlier disagreement that you didn’t resolve and you’re being passive aggressive.

Whatever the cause, you two are stuck in an aspirational gap. Here are a few paths out of it:

  • Repeat what you think your spouse is saying. Doing this engages your active listening function.

  • Look for the “fork” in the conversation, the point where it becomes circular.

  • Ask yourself if there’s an argument between you two and try resolving it. Sometimes the gap isn’t the root of the issue.
