SETTING GOALS
This is the perfect time of year to discuss goal planning.
Many of us are likely in the process of developing plans for 2026 - for our business or our clients’ businesses.
SMART GOALS
You have likely heard of the importance of making S-M-A-R-T goals. Below is a quick refresher.
Specific
Clearly defined goals that are not vague
Measurable
Use actual date to set these goals and include specific numbers (percentages, dollars, etc.)
Achievable
You are reasonably able to get this goal accomplished using your existing talent, resources and budgets
Relevant
A goal should tie back to your overall business objectives
Time-Bound
This can be how often you do a task or time-frame to accomplish
Setting goals this way makes perfect sense.
Instead of saying….
“We want a bigger presence on social media”
you say…
We want to increase our reel views on Instagram (specific) by 15% (measurable, and if you research your statistics, achievable) through consistently well-branded content that leaves viewers curious to know more about our company (relevant to your business) by uploading new content three times a week (time-bound, but be sure it’s achievable).
But we know that for couples in business, goal setting includes a few more aspects that go beyond the goals themselves.
Our T-E-A-M framework is more about HOW to set (and ultimately achieve) these goals as a couple.
T-E-A-M
T-E-A-M
Together
You need to be sure you’re setting these goals as a couple with complete buy-in from both parties.
Evaluate Roles
We talk about having clearly defined roles often on this show. It’s a key to working better together.
As you take time to set goals for the coming year, it’s a perfect time to check in to see if you’re still in the right roles.
Acknowledge Challenges
What might keep you from reaching goals?
As a couple in business, if you’re experiencing personal or health issues, it will affect both of you. Or if you’re in a particular season of life - raising small children or caring for aging parents (or both) - you might need to adapt your goals accordingly.
A non-couple business partner might be able to do the heavy lifting, but as a couple you rely on each other.
Mark Progress
You need to build into your goals a time to check in, see how things are going and celebrate wins.
One of our favorite people to interview is Pat Schober. His company, Poetica Marketing, helps companies tell their brand stories online and in person.
In this episode, Pat defines content marketing and gives pointers about how to channel it for success.
“All of us are content marketers without realizing it. Any time we create any sort of promotional content, that’s content marketing. When you go out networking and the next day you post a selfie to LinkedIn that you took with a few friends that you made there, that's content marketing. Content marketing is a bunch of individual pieces of content that you create, and the strategy tying those assets together and getting them out in front of people.
There are three things that I think are important to keep in mind.
It's not about being interesting. It's about providing value during the buyer's journey. It's awesome if you are creating the next super sexy electric vehicle, or if you're doing skydiving trips. All of these things are really flashy, but there are a lot of businesses that are necessary to create the boring stuff of the world. And there are people that need that stuff— as dull as it might be. Your goal is for people learn to learn like and trust you and feel comfortable buying from you.
If you already have customers, you already have a devoted following. If you have a devoted customer base who comes back time and time again, you're already in. You already know that you can build a customer base.
Content marketing can be intimidating. There's no one perfect silver bullet that's going to be the right fit for everybody. But the nice thing about it is that for small businesses who don't have a big ad budget, content marketing doesn’t cost anything.”
