How to Be a Good Corporate Citizen

“Being a good corporate citizen” may sound like buzz words, but it’s a practice that yields massive returns for you and your team.

Your business is under more scrutiny from customers and prospects than ever. From social media. From one-to-one meetings. From the partners you choose. From the products you produce-and those you buy. The standards you set are telling everybody who you are and what you stand for.

Harvard Law School presented a Forum on Corporate Governance that lists great starting points for corporate citizenship. Among them are:

  • Paying living wages to your team and contractors

  • Hiring and keeping people regardless of race, ethnic, religious or gender considerations

  • Making your place of business a no-harassment zone for all your employees

  • Avoiding harm that shifts environmental cost from your business to the community

  • Supporting schools, nonprofits and hospitals in your community

“Look at something that you, as a business owner, are passionate about--or that your business fits into.”

—Jodie
