Are You Dealing with Decision Fatigue?

Let’s talk about decision fatigue.

This is not to be confused with analysis paralysis – which is very fun to say but not so much fun to deal with. With analysis paralysis, you are often overthinking, spending too much time doing research or are letting fear keep you from making a decision.

With decision fatigue, you’re not OVERTHINKING; you’re EXHAUSTED FROM THINKING.

According to Dictionary.com:

Decision fatigue is mental and emotional exhaustion resulting from excessive or relentless decision-making, especially the cumulative effect of small decisions that one makes throughout each day.

Which socks to wear or what size coffee to order may seem trivial, but add them to the other 30,000 choices you’ll make today, and you’ve got the recipe for decision fatigue.

There are two great articles on the topic – one from Cleveland Clinic and one from the American Medical Association. We explore each below.

The Cleveland Clinic article lists 8 Signs of Decision Fatigue:

  1. Procrastination or decision avoidance

  2. Impulsivity

  3. Exhaustion

  4. Brain fog

  5. Irritability

  6. Feeling Overwhelmed

  7. Dissatisfaction

  8. Physical discomfort

You might deal with one or several of these. If so, take a closer look to see if you are dealing with decision fatigue or full-blown burn out. There is a lot of overlap between the signs of both. With burnout, the solution will be a bit more complicated. With decision fatigue, you could employ a few of the ideas listed below to help address it.

According to the AMA article you can:

  • Streamline your choices

  • Delegate decisions

  • Make big decisions in the morning

  • Stop second-guessing yourself

  • Develop daily routines
