Dealing With Distractions as you Manage Your Small Business

Distractions have a way of sneaking up on us but they can compound throughout the day. And while these interruptions and distractions might seem like just an annoyance, their impact is very real for small business owners.

This is astonishing—according to the website The HR Digest, most U.S. workers spend 2 to 3 hours per day…not on distractions…but on productive time!!! WOWZA!

FUN FACT:

The 23-minute rule is a productivity concept stating that it takes an average of 23 minutes and 15 seconds to fully regain deep focus after being interrupted. Coined from research by Dr. Gloria Mark at the University of California, Irvine, it highlights the hidden cost of context.

I am obsessed with inbox ZERO so I check emails a lot. And I know that it takes me out of what I should be doing…but it’s a hard habit to break.
— Jodie, on her biggest distraction

Distractions are a good thing?

  • Sometimes a distraction is the mind telling its user that it needs a break.

  • A distraction may come with benefits; try looking for ideas inside the distractions.

  • Make your task list so that it allows (some) time for distractions during the day.
