A Few Thoughts About

Working From Home…

This might not apply to all of you…but these tips can be helpful if you find yourself having to set up a work station, even briefly, at home.

For example, snow days or a long break or the eventual AI takeover where your shelter (or cave) becomes your office.

1: Define Your Work Space

Some people can work from anywhere - from the bedroom (actually in bed on a laptop) to the beach and anywhere in between.

That might work for you, but Jodie needs a designated space.

She can occasionally work at a coffee shop or brainstorm with me while on a road trip. But, for the most part, she likes having a specific base of operation.

Jodie’s spare-room-turned-office works perfectly. It feels official. It feels like an office. And it helps her create a productive mindset.

Here’s the tip:

Set up your work space — whether it’s a room or a section of the dining room table — and make that place sacred. It will help you stay focused and allow you to separate work from the rest of your life.

2. Establish Your Routine

Working 9 to 5 (admit it…you just sang “what a way to make a living”) is no longer your mantra. YOU set your schedule.

Jodie is a morning person.

But for me, my day starts a little differently and usually lasts longer; it’s when I’m at my best.

My office is filled with artifacts from my career. It feels like an office. That doesn’t tie me to it when I need to work, though. Likewise, I use it to house my vinyl collection—so it’s a multipurpose room. I like it that way.

3. Dress The Part (and brush your teeth)

When Jodie first started working from home, she wore the same thing she slept in for the entire day and sometimes didn’t brush my teeth until 1 p.m. It grossed her out! She started to feel unproductive, unprofessional and a little unkempt.

Now, she often perform about three “costume changes” per day.

Pajamas -> Office Clothes -> Client Meeting Clothes -> Pajamas

And, she remembers to brush my teeth in the morning … usually.

Do something that helps you physically transition into work mode. This doesn’t mean you have to wear a suit or put on a full face of make-up. But it does help to have clothes and rituals that take you from personal to professional.

And our final tip:

Get out and socialize.

Isolation can be an issue for those of us who work from home. Schedule lunches with friends to catch up. Take time to connect with others in the real world, not just on social media.
