The Four Seasons of Business Ownership
For our main topic on this episode we discussed the different and changing seasons of small business ownership.
(If you are interested in learning how to tame business owner anxiety, you might want to checkout this blog post. )
We used actual seasons as metaphors for your mindset and business focus.
SPRING
A time to plant and grow!
People often think of spring as a new beginning. But in this context, we don’t just mean a new business. We’re talking about a time in your business lifecycle where you and your business partner want and/or need to take a new look at things or come up with a new approach.
A spring mindset can happen at any age of a business. It’s about cultivating those new ideas and working on business growth.
This might happen if you are seeing a decline in sales or are feeling frustrated with aspects of your business.
It’s time to SPRING into action. (See what we did there?)
SUMMER
It’s getting warmer and brighter! Come on in, the water’s fine.
This is a time in your business when you and your spouse are able to enjoy ownership.
The days are long but you are getting a chance to shine.
You might look at scaling your business or entering new markets.
But remember—it’s not the heat, it’s the humidity that’s the problem. So, address any issues that are dampening your growth and your spirit.
FALL (or Autumn, its fancy stage name)
Harvest season.
This is the time of your business cycle when you are reaping the benefits of your business systems and customer relationships. And just as nature does, you should take this bounty and build up your resources, invest in things that will help you sustain your business health and be prepared for the future.
As a couple in business, take this time to invest in each other as well.
Celebrate your wins and recognize how you’re able to grow great things together.
WINTER
We’re not referring to a cold and icy ending.
In nature, winter is actually a super important time of rest and renewal. The plants reset and germinate and pest populations are managed.
So, it’s basically a time to get rid of the bad and refresh the good.
How does this apply to your business?
It doesn’t matter how many years you’ve been in business, there is always going to be a time for you to reflect on what is working well and what needs to be purged.
And as a couple in business this can mean reviewing your roles and goals together.
