The “obvious” things your business does for your customers and clients aren’t necessarily obvious to them. If they don’t know what you know, they may not see the value your work represents.

“Why is this so expensive?”

It’s a question that can bring your business relationship to a screeching halt. Your client calls about an invoice from your company; they’re asking about the cost of an item (sometimes the entire amount due) and sound puzzled or peeved.

This frequently happens when a client gets in a cash flow bind or loses an account. You haven’t increased your rates without advance notice (BIG no-no), nor has anything else changed.

Yet, here you are.

Create value on day one

A good way to head off any perception that your service and products are overpriced is to create a welcome package. In it, you can spotlight how you do what you do—and how it’s a good value for clients. Make sure you put a welcome package in your customer’s hand early in your relationship. This is onboarding, and it’s your ounce of prevention.

Keep in touch

It should go without saying that regular contact with your customers is essential. You’d be surprised how many business owners overlook doing this. Face time isn’t just for mobile gadgets; schedule periodic in-person meetings. Reinforce your service and its value to the customer, or introduce new ideas that they can understand and find value in.

Maybe you’ve been doing your work long enough that you take it for granted. Keep your customers in the know about what you know.
